VFA 15 is one of the oldest squadrons in the Navy, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 1992. Since its inception, barely a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the squadron has flown six types of aircraft: SBD Dauntless, TBM Avenger, AD-4 Skyraider, A-4 Skyhawk, A-7 Corsair II and the F/A-18 Hornet.

The Valions were established as Torpedo Squadron Four aboard USS Ranger in January 1942. Since then, the VFA 15 has seen extensive sea time and combat action while embarked aboard 14 different aircraft carriers.

From the start of WWII, the Valions have been in the forefront of strike warfare, beginning with their first combat action during Operation Torch off the North African coast in 1942. From there it was on to the Pacific theater to participate in the liberation of the Philippines in 1943.

During Operation Desert Storm, the Valions were deployed aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and were instrumental in the successful liberation of Kuwait. The Valions also participated in Operation Provide Promise and the Operation Deny Flight.

More recently the Valions completed a deployment in support of NATO operations in the European theater of operations.
